The Workshop

Have you got a sewing machine gathering dust? Have you thought ‘One day I’ll learn what to do with this, but I’m a bit frightened of it!’? If so, read on!

Your tutor, Melinda, is looking forward to meeting you and says: “Are you:

  • a complete beginner with a sewing machine?
  • wanting to learn more about how your machine works?
  • wanting to gain more confidence on your machine?
  • looking to purchase a machine but unsure what they can do?

Then look no further – this 1/2 day workshop could be what you are looking for.

On this workshop you will learn about the different aspects of your machine and how to use it / get the most from it. The session will explore the different settings on sewing machines and how to use them. We will look at using different fabrics and adjusting the tension to suit each type. We will also troubleshoot some of the common problems experienced with sewing machines and how to remedy them to improve your sewing experience. We will end the session by looking at how to carry out basic maintenance of your machine to keep it running as smoothly as possible.

You can either bring your machine to learn about or you are welcome to use one of our machines to gain an understanding. If you are bringing your machine, remember to bring any accessories which came with it. e.g different feet etc.” NB: Our Crafty Place only has 6 sewing machines at present, so, if you can bring your sewing machine that leaves 6 available for people who do not have one yet.

Once you know the basics, the world of sewing will just open up and you’ll get the bug!!

What is the cost?

£25 + 63p card fee This includes the basic materials needed to explore how to best use your sewing machine and refreshments during the morning (excluding lunch)

How many places are available?

To ensure the quality of your personal experience, the group size is limited to 12. Please be aware when booking … if you don’t have a sewing machine because you are thinking of purchasing one you MUST let us know that you need to borrow one for the morning please. That means we are prepared and have one ready for you to trial.

What are the timings?

This is a relaxed, half-day running from 10am to 12.30pm.

Our purple front door will be open from 9.30am so we can welcome you in, you can get to meet Melinda and your fellow machiners and grab a cuppa before you start.

What skills are needed?

No experience is necessary. Threading a sewing machine needle can be tricky, as you need good hand-eye skills. Using the machine pedal requires understanding of pressure through the foot. There are levers to operate. If you have purchased a machine you may already have solutions. If you haven’t got a sewing machine we can help you find ways to get to grips with any difficulties.

What to bring on the day?

Anticipation to enjoy the whole experience!

Specific to this workshop:

  • Your sewing machine and its accessories, including the needles! Please don’t leave home without these! Although we will be providing the material and threads please feel free to bring along any of yours, if you particularly want to learn how to sew a certain type of fabric.
  • Reading glasses if you need them.

We will be providing drinks and home-made biscuits throughout the morning.

We want you to go home with a spring in your step and feel empowered to start all those sewing projects you have been promising yourself that you would do! To make sure we can thoroughly look after you during your workshop please fill in your booking form with all the things that will help, be it your favourite milk, or any extra support you may require. Please also let us know of allergies that we may need to highlight to your fellow crafters e.g. nuts, perfume. Many thanks.

How to get here

Our Crafty Place

1 Corporation Road
Ilkeston,DE7 4ASUnited Kingdom

Please be aware that there is no on-site parking and we are on quite a busy road. There are residential side roads near the building. We advise parking alongside the grassy area across the road off the main road (it is a small triangle of land which, if you are approaching us from the Nottingham Road, will be on your right hand side before you get to our building, which is on your left).

If you are coming by bus, all buses stop along Nottingham Road, which is just a short stroll away. The buses that stop at the end of the road are: ‘the two’ and ‘my 15’. Points of reference are KLG Rutland and Gallows Inn (both next to the canal). The street that runs alongside KLG is called Thurman Street and this quickly becomes Corporation Road, shortly after The Triangle (a green space that is the shape of a triangle). You will see our big building with its purple doors on the left hand side.
