The Workshop

Your tutor, Jennifer, is looking forward to meeting you and says:

“This one day course aims to equip you with the skills, tools and glass to create between 1 and 2 stained glass sun catchers, using the copper foil technique.

The copper foil method, also called the Tiffany Method, of stained-glass construction involves wrapping the edges of each piece in your project with a copper foil tape. The pieces are then joined by soldering them together on both front and back which creates a metal framework that holds the glass pieces together.

We start the workshop with a description of the basic tools used to score and cut glass and a short demonstration on how to break glass safely. You will then be given the opportunity to practice your cutting skills on some standard ‘float’ glass.

Once you feel comfortable you will choose a design from the many templates available. You will cut and prepare some pieces of coloured art glass, ready to build into your first design. You will then learn how to grind the edges of each piece of your glass ready for foiling. You will be shown how to foil the pieces of glass.

After a break for lunch, we will carry on and learn how to solder all our pieces of glass together. If there is time a second sun catcher can be made. And all pieces made will be yours to take home and keep.”

What is the cost?

£85 + £1.55 card fee. This includes all the materials needed to make your sun catcher(s) and refreshments during the day (excluding lunch).

How many places are available?

To ensure the quality of your personal experience, the group size is limited to 6.

What are the timings?

This is a full-day exciting, engrossing course, from 10am to 4pm. Your day will fly by, as you learn the skills required.

Our purple front door will be open from 9.30am so we can welcome you in, you can get to meet Jennifer and your fellow crafters and grab a cuppa before you start.

What skills are needed?

No prior experience needed. Jennifer will teach you all you need to know.

Although cutting glass sounds ‘tricky’ it is actually quite a simple, gentle thing once you know the technique. Don’t be scared about the thought of it.

You will need to concentrate but every element is fun and engrossing.

Using a soldering iron can be a bit daunting to start with but Jennifer will be on hand to give you specific techniques that will keep you safe and comfortable.

Specific to this workshop:

When glass is being cut small fragments are inevitable:

• For your safety you must wear shoes that totally cover your feet: no sandals, flip flops or opened toed shoes to be worn.
• If you have a know allergy to plasters please bring some that you know you can use. Even professional glass cutters can sometimes end up with small glass cuts.
• A closed lidded coffee mug or spouted water bottle. Open vessels cannot be used whilst working with glass.
• Reading glasses if you need them.

Please bring your own lunch or some money to buy something from either the hot-food hut nearby or the small local Asda. We will be providing drinks and home-made biscuits throughout the day.

We want you to go home with a spring in your step and feel really good about what you have achieved. To make sure we can thoroughly look after you during your workshop please fill in your booking form with all the things that will help, be it your favourite milk, or any extra support you may require.
