The Workshop

Christmas is fast approaching, so why not Make Your Own Festive Stained Glass Sun Catcher to brighten your home or give as a beautiful handmade gift?

Join tutor Jennifer for this inspiring one-day workshop where you will learn how to create one or two festive stained glass sun catchers using the copper foil technique.

Jennifer will introduce you to the tools used to score and cut glass and will demonstrate how to break glass safely. You will then practise cutting techniques using standard float glass so you can build confidence before starting your own design.

Once you feel ready, choose from a range of festive templates and begin creating your sun catcher using colourful art glass. You will cut your pieces, grind the edges smooth, and then wrap them in copper foil ready for assembly.

After lunch, Jennifer will guide you through the soldering process as you join your glass pieces together to form your finished sun catcher. If time allows, you may even create a second design.

By the end of the day, you will have learned the essential skills of the Tiffany copper foil method and will take home your own beautiful festive stained glass sun catcher to display and enjoy.

What to bring on the day?

Anticipation to enjoy the whole experience!

Specific to this workshop:

  • When glass is being cut small fragments are inevitable: For your safety you must wear shoes that totally cover your feet: no sandals, flip flops or opened toed shoes to be worn.
  • If you have a know allergy to plasters please bring some that you know you can use. Even professional glass cutters can sometimes end up with small glass cuts.
  • A closed lidded coffee mug or spouted water bottle. Open vessels cannot be used whilst working with glass.
  • Reading glasses if you need them.
  • Please bring your own lunch or some money to buy something from either the hot-food hut nearby or the small local Asda.

What skills Do I Need?

  • No prior experience needed. Jennifer will teach you all you need to know.
  • Although cutting glass sounds ‘tricky’ it is actually quite a simple, gentle thing once you know the technique. Don’t be scared about the thought of it. If you can hold a pencil you can hold the cutting tool.
  • You will need to concentrate but every element is fun and engrossing.
  • Using a soldering iron can be a bit daunting to start with but Jennifer will be on hand to give you specific techniques that will keep you safe and comfortable.
