Early Inspirations

From as far back as I can remember, crafting has been a constant in my life. Growing up in a hands-on, creative household, I was surrounded by inspiration. My dad tackled all the DIY projects, and I was right there beside him, learning as I helped. He also created beautiful cross-stitch samplers to relax, a hobby he shared with my mum, who has always been a talented knitter. Even now, she still knits with the same passion she always has.

That early exposure to creativity planted the seed of my love for crafting. Over the years, it has become more than just a pastime, it’s a way to relax, express myself, and bring joy to those around me. Whether it’s making gifts, decorating cakes, or creating something spectacular from nothing, crafting has always played a huge role in my life.

Transforming Ideas into Reality

One of my favourite aspects of crafting is its ability to transform simple materials into something extraordinary. My husband often remarks on my creative energy, especially in the months leading up to Christmas, when our dining room would be taken over by stacks of cardboard boxes. Those same boxes would eventually become imaginative stage props, helping to bring children’s Christmas concerts to life. He describes the magic of watching me turn packing sheets into Palm Court feathers, repurpose a few boxes into a music-making machine, or decorate a room into an enchanting grotto that would leave children wide-eyed with belief and excitement. Birthdays, too, have never been ordinary in our home—each one made extra special with a touch of handmade magic.

I can never choose a favourite craft or technique, because I love experimenting with new ones. There’s something thrilling about taking basic materials and seeing what they can become. Some of my most rewarding projects have been those where I’ve created immersive experiences. One that stands out is the stage makeover for the Kidsophonic concert, where I built an instrument-making machine from cardboard boxes and childrens crawl-through tunnels. The transformation was something special, and knowing I had created a world for children to engage with made it even more meaningful.

Crafting as a Source of Well-being

Crafting isn’t just about the final product; it’s about the process. It’s my escape, my way to switch off from the world and unwind. It brings a sense of peace that is hard to find elsewhere. And beyond that, it’s about sharing the experience with others. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching and sharing crafting is seeing someone else’s sense of accomplishment when they create something they never thought they could. That moment of pride, of realising they are more capable than they believed – it’s priceless.

For anyone who thinks they aren’t creative, my advice is simple: just have a go. Crafting isn’t about producing a masterpiece; it’s about the joy and fulfilment you get while doing it. The process itself is the magic.
