Friendships often lead to unexpected adventures, and the story of Our Crafty Place CIC is no exception. Viv and I have known each other for many years, brought together through music. I play the clarinet in various groups with Viv’s husband, Phil, and over time, our friendship naturally grew. We’d often meet up socially, sharing good food, wine and music, and, as it turns out, dreams that would one day shape our future.
It all started over a Christmas meal in 2022. We sat down to catch up on life, work, and everything in between. As we talked, Viv opened up about something that had been weighing on her mind. After 31 years as an occupational therapist, she was beginning to feel something was missing in her daily work. She had a dream – one that had been quietly brewing in the background – a vision of a craft centre where people could come together, experience the well-being benefits of creativity, and build meaningful community connections.
Without hesitation, I looked at Viv and said, “I’m in.”
It was a spontaneous decision, but one that felt completely right. That moment set everything in motion. Over the following months, we had more serious discussions. We mapped out our vision, talked about our shared love of crafting, and imagined what such a space could bring to the community. Both of us had seen first-hand how crafting can heal, inspire, and bring people together, and we wanted to share that with as many people as possible.
Turning the Dream into Reality
From that point on, we poured our energy into making Our Crafty Place a reality. We found the perfect property, No. 1 Corporation Road, Ilkeston, Derbyshire, DE7 4AS, but securing it came with its own challenges. The building had previously been a church, so we needed planning permission to change its use to a craft centre. After a long process, we were thrilled when permission was granted in November 2024.
While waiting for approval, we kept moving forward. We launched our website, built strong relationships with many talented tutors who shared our vision, and connected with organisations such as Erewash Borough Council and Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Public Health Derbyshire. Our efforts even led to securing funding from the East Midlands Airport Community Fund, an important step in making our dream sustainable.
Our Backgrounds and What We Bring to Our Crafty Place
Both Viv and I bring different strengths to the business, but our shared passion for creativity and community is at its core.
I have a lifelong love of crafting, rooted in a family history of creativity. My background includes working as a pattern grader and cutter in the lingerie industry, as well as years of teaching music. As an amateur musician, I play in and serve on the committee of musical groups that have raised thousands of pounds for charities. I’ve always believed in the power of creativity to bring people together, and this project is an extension of that belief.
Viv, with her 31 years of experience as an occupational therapist, has a deep understanding of how craft activities can be adapted to suit all abilities. Her expertise helps us ensure that everyone, regardless of their physical or mental health challenges, can take part and benefit from creative expression. She knows how crafting can enhance mental well-being, aid physical rehabilitation, and promote social connection, key elements of Our Crafty Place’s mission.
Becoming a CIC - A Happy Twist of Fate
At the very beginning, our plan was to rent a small commercial space that could seat around eight people for craft workshops. We didn’t even know what a CIC (Community Interest Company) was! But a conversation between my husband, Dan, and one of his clients changed everything.
Dan’s client, who has been involved in charities for many years, suggested we investigate setting up a CIC. He pointed us toward the CVS in Ripley, where Glynn guided us through the process of registering as a Community Interest Company with Companies House. It was a game-changer. Becoming a CIC meant we could truly focus on making a difference while accessing funding and support that wouldn’t otherwise have been available.
A Journey of Passion and Purpose
Looking back, it’s incredible to see how far we’ve come from that Christmas meal in 2022. What started as a simple conversation has grown into a fully realised community craft centre, one that is inclusive, welcoming, and dedicated to improving lives through creativity.
We can’t wait to welcome you to Our Crafty Place, where everyone, regardless of experience or ability, can explore, create, and connect. This is just the beginning, and we’re so excited for what’s to come!
