At Our Crafty Place, we believe that crafting is about more than just making beautiful things - it’s about connection, confidence, and community. When we first got the keys to our stunning old Wesleyan chapel in January 2025, it had been sitting empty for over a year. The building was cold, tired, and suffering from quite a bit of surface mould. Friendships often lead to unexpected adventures, and the story of Our Crafty Place CIC is no exception. Viv and I have known each other for many years, brought together through music. I play the clarinet in various groups with Viv’s husband, Phil, and over time, our friendship naturally grew. We’d often meet up socially, sharing good food, wine and music, and, as it turns out, dreams that would one day shape our future.
From as far back as I can remember, crafting has been a constant in my life. Growing up in a hands-on, creative household, I was surrounded by inspiration. He also created beautiful cross-stitch samplers to relax, a hobby he shared with my mum, who has always been a talented knitter. Even now, she still knits with the same passion she always has.
Why is a woman (who loved her career of 36 years, who was told by a teacher as a child that she was no good at art, and who didn’t actually start ‘having a go’ at creative ‘stuff’ until her 40s) now absolutely bursting with excitement and anticipation about completely changing direction in life and opening a craft centre?
